QUESTIONS ABOUT CARGO VOLUMES
What is volumetric weight?
The volumetric weight of a load is the space it occupies on the aircraft and it affects the cost of the shipment more than its actual weight.
How is the volume calculated?
In order to calculate the volume as accurately as possible, it is first essential to know the total dimensions of the shipment (length x width x height). So, the formula for calculating the volume is as straightforward as this:
Volume = length x width x height
Let’s look at an example: Assuming the overall dimensions of the boxes or packages are:
height: length 1.2 metres, width 1.00 metres, height: 1.5 metres
Then the cargo volume will be:
Vol. = length x width x height, Vol. = 1.20 m x 1.00 m x 1.50 m, Vol.= 1.8 m3
What is the volume-weight ratio?
Depending on the type of transport used, the weight-volume ratio will vary.
- Air freight 1 m3 = 167 kg
- Road freight 1 m3 = 333 kg
- Sea freight 1 m3 = 1,000 kg
